A-Z of Nutrition and ADHD – B is for Blood Sugar Balance

Welcome to my A – Z of Nutrition and ADHD series!

Over the course of these posts I’m hoping to raise awareness of the link between nutrition, lifestyle choices and ADHD symptoms.

B is for Blood Sugar Balance

A-Z nutrition and ADHD

When it comes to managing ADHD, blood sugar balance is often overlooked—but it’s foundational.

Sudden spikes and crashes in blood glucose can lead to irritability, poor focus, hyperactivity, and mood swings—things that are already challenging for many individuals with ADHD.

Why does this matter?

Because ADHD brains are wired to seek stimulation, and unstable blood sugar can make symptoms worse. A sugary breakfast might give a temporary energy boost, but it’s often followed by a crash—leaving the brain foggy, distracted, or craving more sugar.

✅ Here’s how to support steady blood sugar:

  • Ensure meals contain good levels of protein and healthy fats—like eggs, nut butter, or yogurt.
  • Choose fibre-rich complex carbs (like oats, whole fruit, or sweet potatoes) to slow digestion, over fibre stripped, refined carbs (white rice, white bread, white pasta).
  • Avoid ultra-processed snacks that spike insulin (think white bread, sugary cereals and snack bars, crisps, juice, fizzy drinks).
  • Include healthy snacks between meals to prevent dips— and make sure that they contain some protein (fruit + nuts, oatcakes + nut butter, rye bread + houmous)

Supporting blood sugar balance is a simple, powerful step toward better attention, emotional regulation, and energy.
