What is Executive Functioning?

ADHD CoachingExecutive functioning refers to the mental skills that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and manage multiple tasks successfully. These skills are crucial for achieving goals, managing time, and maintaining organisation. For individuals with ADHD, executive functioning can be a significant area of difficulty, but with the right support and strategies, these challenges can be effectively managed.

Having trained with ADHD Works, I utilise their comprehensive Executive Functioning Framework, which focuses on the following key areas:

    • I coach from a strengths-based perspective and my goal is to help you capitalise on the amazing strengths of ADHD

ADHD Coaching: My Approach

I believe in a personalised, empathetic and positive approach. I work closely with you to understand your unique needs and goals. Through one-on-one sessions, I provide tailored strategies and support to help you build on your executive functioning skills.

Why work with me?

I’ve been coaching people in nutrition since 2009, so have a huge amount of coaching experience to call on. But I knew that this standard coaching approach wouldn’t necessarily work for people with ADHD so I decided to retrain.

My desire to become an ADHD coach was due to lived experience: my son has ADHD and was diagnosed in his second year of university, when it became apparent that he was struggling to live independently and study at the same time. I wanted to support him as best I could but was realistic enough to know that he needed the help of someone independent, not me or his dad, to overcome his challenges.

During my search for help I became aware that there was such a thing as an ADHD coach, and this seemed like the perfect solution for my son. I found the right coach and I’m so grateful that I did, as without his help, I don’t think my son would have graduated.

As a result of the extensive research that I’ve done into ADHD (quite possibly a hyper-focus!) I have learned more about how ADHD manifests in women and I’m certain that I also have ADHD. Women and girls are likely to mask their symptoms to fit in or meet societal norms, and as a result it can be difficult to spot them. It’s a generalisation, but where boys are likely to be openly restless, women and girls internalise this restlessness and can be overwhelmed by racing thoughts which can lead to decision paralysis and self-doubt, not to mention fatigue.

There is also a link between perimenopause, menopause and ADHD, meaning that many women, like me, begin to suspect ADHD at this time in their lives, as oestrogen levels are dropping.

ADHD Coaching: Who do I work with?

  • Anyone who has been recently diagnosed and wants to understand how to work with their ADHD
  • Women in mid-life who suspect they have ADHD or have a recent diagnosis
  • Children over the age of 16
  • Young people who are starting University or leaving home for the first time
  • Entrepreneurs who are struggling to fulfil their business goals

ADHD and Nutrition

Another reason for my interest in ADHD is the link between nutrition and ADHD. As someone with ADHD it can be hard to motivate yourself to prepare food and even eat. You can forget to eat when caught up in a hyper-focus and planning ahead in terms of meals can be a challenge.

ADHD is associated with differences in dopamine signalling and reward pathways, which can affect motivation, cravings, food choices and follow-through and people with ADHD may be drawn to foods that cause a dopamine high (sugar, refined carbohydrates, processed foods, caffeine, alcohol). And over-consumption of these types of foods can lead to blood sugar dysregulation which can in turn make ADHD symptoms worse. In addition to this, ADHD medication can also impact appetite and disrupt sleep.

People with ADHD can be susceptible to nutrient deficiencies both because of their dietary habits and their physiology. There are key nutrients required by the nervous system in order to produce vital neurotransmitters in which they could be lacking and supporting their brain health is key.

I have created a range of nutritional therapy packages for those with ADHD. Click to find out more.

“ADHD coaching with Emily has been eye opening. It’s so reassuring to talk so openly and feel like I’m being completely understood for the first time. It’s like speaking a language someone understands. I’m now equipped with helpful tools and tips to keep me on track with every day life. Incredibly grateful!”
“Being able to communicate and feeling like I was being completely understood felt so freeing and built my confidence. I’m slowly thinking more bravely and questioning the reality of my thoughts. I’m putting into action the steps I need to take in order to achieve, rather than procrastinating about it. I’m feeling more confident that I can achieve what I want.”
