Welcome to my A – Z of Nutrition and ADHD series!
Over the course of these posts I’m hoping to raise awareness of the link between nutrition, lifestyle choices and ADHD symptoms.
Y is for Yoghurt
Yoghurt might seem like a simple snack — but it has big potential when it comes to supporting the ADHD brain, especially through the gut-brain axis.
The gut is home to trillions of bacteria that influence not only digestion, but also mood, behaviour, immunity, and even neurotransmitter production (like serotonin and dopamine). This connection — the gut-brain axis — plays a growing role in ADHD research.
Yoghurt, particularly live or fermented varieties, can:
- Introduce beneficial bacteria to the gut (probiotics)
- Support a more balanced mood and emotional regulation
- Help calm digestive issues, which are common in ADHD
- Work alongside prebiotic-rich foods (like oats, bananas, and garlic) to nourish the microbiome
ADHD-friendly yoghurt ideas:
✅ Choose full fat, plain, natural or Greek yoghurt with no added sugar
✅ Top with berries, seeds, and oats for fibre and nutrients
✅ Mix with nut butter, vanilla essence or cinnamon for flavour and protein
✅ Use as a dip for fruit, crackers, or raw vegetable batons
✅ For dairy-free options, go for live coconut or soya yoghurts with added cultures
Supporting gut health is one of the gentlest and most effective nutritional steps for many ADHD individuals. Yoghurt is a simple place to start — easy to eat, easy to digest, and easy to enjoy.
Do you include yoghurt or probiotic foods in your routine? Have you noticed any difference in mood or digestion?
