Resolving Digestive Issues Naturally

I would estimate that 70% of my clients come to me with digestive issues – it might not be the main reason that they are seeking my help, but it’s certainly part of the reason that they are working with me.

Common symptoms that clients come to me with are:

  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Inconsistent bowel movements
  • Indigestion
  • Acid reflux
  • Excess or smelly wind
  • Stomach pain

One of the most interesting parts of my job is determining the underlying cause of these symptoms. Bloating, for example, could be caused by a range of issues: maldigestion due to low stomach acid or a lack of digestive enzymes; dysbiosis (an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the gut or microbiome); a pathogen (a “bad” bacteria, yeast overgrowth or parasite); SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth); constipation; a food sensitivity or possibly lactose intolerance.

Sometimes the underlying cause can be clear – you might already be aware of it, or after careful questioning it becomes apparent, but often I will suggest using testing to be sure that we know what we are dealing with.

The test I use probably more than any other in my clinic is Genova’s GI Effects test. This looks at your digestion from the stomach down. It gives us insight into how well you are digesting your food, whether there is inflammation in the gut, shows us a full picture of the health of your microbiome and identifies any pathogens including parasites.

Genova's GI Effect Test

This test enables us to identify the underlying causes of your symptoms and target the areas of your digestion that we need to prioritise.

Good digestion is fundamental to good health. Without good digestion we will struggle to absorb nutrients from food, which could lead to fatigue, low mood, poor growth, and many other symptoms. Without a healthy microbiome (the bacteria in your gut) you are more likely to suffer with mood dysregulation, imbalanced hormones and raised cholesterol. If our diet isn’t liver-supportive we are more likely to display signs of toxicity, fatigue and hormone imbalance. Good digestion should be a priority for us all.

“Emily Fawell is an excellent nutritionist. Very knowledgeable and personable. I had been suffering with IBS for 10 years and the supplements and diet regime she set out for me have improved my symptoms SIGNIFICANTLY! When I started the new diet didn’t take the supplements and I was still getting symptoms. Soon as I started them the symptoms stopped. AMAZING!”
