What do previous Zest4Life participants say about the programme?
“I was diagnosed with Diabetes Type II in September 2013 and my GP wanted me to lose weight as a means of lowering down my blood sugar levels. A friend of a friend recommended me to see Emily for nutritional advice and weight loss. I had my first consultation in October 2013; Emily was very patient and answered the numerous questions I had about my condition, specifying food portions and combinations, and pointing out where I had gone wrong for so many years. She also explained to me in detail the significance of the various blood tests performed by my GP prior to being diagnosed as a diabetic. Emily is very knowledgeable and I find that there is nothing much that she does not know when it comes to nutrition, diet, exercise, relaxation, supplements and alternative therapies. Since October 2013, I have lost 4 kilos, 10 cms from my waist and 10% body fat. My hydration levels have gone up as well as my energy levels. Emily follows the guidelines of Patrick Holford’s low GL diet in her zest4life classes. She provides you with several booklets during the course, advice as to what you can eat/drink or should avoid when lunching or dining out and is always available to answer even the silliest of questions. The Holford Diet cookbook provided me with lots of delicious recipes and with an allowance of up to 45 GLs per day I never feel hungry, which is an essential factor in one’s motivation to persevere with the diet. I would certainly recommend Emily and her zest4life classes to anybody who would want to consult a truly good nutritional expert and achieve durable weight loss.” Aline
“I have lost almost 2 stone on zest4life in 6 months. I have made a number of changes to my eating and lifestyle which have really made a difference to my health and fitness too. I feel transformed and have more energy and confidence as a result. Emily has been very encouraging and knowledgeable but always pragmatic which I have really valued. I really like the holistic focus of zest4life and can highly recommend it.” Anna, Ealing
“Great support from Emily. It’s been the best weight loss programme I’ve ever tried” Joanne, Ealing
“I have lost two and a quarter stone since starting zest4life. My hormonal symptoms are gone completely and my energy levels are much more even. I still have a way to go but I find myself very committed to the way of eating so hope to continue on this path. Emily has been positive, supportive and engaging – she is always trying to find new ways to help us.” Charlotte, Ealing
“This was a great course! Like most people I signed up looking for weight loss. I’m not someone who habitually diets and I didn’t want to get into something that was short term results for longer term increased weight gain. I hate being hungry or obsessing about food and I wanted something that was liveable with – my husband is a great cook an most of our social / leisure time revolves around food & wine. I knew low GL diets were generally seen as one of the more healthy options and I’d seen it work well for a friend of mine so I took the plunge.
The concept behind the diet element is pretty simple: Limit your carbs, and make sure the carbs you do eat are slow releasing so you release energy gradually but consistently over the day so you don’t keep triggering your insulin response with energy highs followed by lows and your body storing the excess as fat.
Applying it in practice so it worked for me and my lifestyle was somewhat harder and this is where the weekly sessions really helped. In addition to measuring weight & body fat percentage (the info stays between you and Emily – no naming and shaming or pressure to share) there are sessions covering items like eating out, drinking, snacks, identifying triggers, food intolerances etc. They also give an opportunity to ask Emily specific questions or plan for specific events.
Upshot of the 10 weeks for me was that I hit my [albeit rather modest] weight loss goals and as an added bonus it came mainly from fat loss, so hips, thighs and belly – yay! and I’m still losing – double yay!!. But from early on I got some unexpected and welcome benefits: my sleep patterns improved and my digestion has speeded up. My energy levels are better which has made getting through the day easier and more fun, and generally I feel much more like my old self.
Finally, Emily is a really important part of the success of the programme – she is hugely knowledgeable but keeps it light, pragmatic and realistic. She encourages without patronising or preaching to you and treats you like a grown up!” Sarah, Ealing
