What on earth is SIBO?

You may have seen in my recent newsletter I mentioned a digestive condition called SIBO  – which stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. Have you heard of this?

Symptoms are very similar to those attributed to IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome):

  • Bloating
  • Stomach pain
  • Excess gas
  • Burping
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Feeling of fullness after a meal

These symptoms are caused by unwanted bacteria in the small intestine feeding on the undigested fibres in the food and producing gas (hydrogen and methane) as a result. In a healthy digestive system bacteria would primarily reside in the large intestine but for many reasons (including excessive antibiotics, abdominal surgery, low stomach acid, use of antacids and PPIs, structural issues) these bacteria start to proliferate in the small intestine, start fermenting the food that you are eating and creating gas as a result.

Luckily you can now test for SIBO – it involves a straightforward breath test that can be performed at home.
