Ice Cream Alternatives – Frozen Yoghurt Recipe

No one can deny that ice cream is delicious, but many shop bought brands are full of preservatives and additives, not to mention sugar and saturated fat. Ice cream is also not an option for those of us that are lactose intolerant.

The following recipe is for frozen yoghurt, using live, plain yoghurt which is lower in lactose than ice cream and contains no added sugar. The sweetness is provided by the fruit. If it’s not sweet enough for your children try adding a little agave syrup or xylitol (natural sugar replacement).

The recipe is perfect for kids to make too – they’ll love mashing the bananas and then stirring in the yoghurt and berries

Berry Banana Frozen Yoghurt

  • Two small bananas
  • 600g live plain yoghurt
  • 8 heaped tablespoons of mixed berries (raspberries, strawberries, blueberries) – fresh or defrosted from frozen
  1. Mash the banana and mix in a bowl with the yoghurt and berries, until the mixture is well blended
  2. Pour into a plastic container (an old ice cream tub would be perfect!)
  3. Seal with a lid and place in the freezer for 2 hours to chill and harden
  4. Go to the park with your kids
  5. Take the container out of the freezer and mash it up with a fork to break up any ice crystals

If you’ve left it for any longer than 2 hours you may need to leave it to stand for a while until it’s ready to be mashed

Serve and enjoy!
