Welcome to my A – Z of Nutrition and ADHD series!
Over the course of these posts I’m hoping to raise awareness of the link between nutrition, lifestyle choices and ADHD symptoms.
L is for L-Theanine
L-Theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid found primarily in green tea — and it’s gaining attention for its calming effects on the brain, particularly in individuals with ADHD.
People with ADHD often experience heightened levels of internal noise — racing thoughts, overstimulation, and difficulty transitioning between tasks. L-Theanine may help by promoting a state of calm alertness without sedation.
What does L-Theanine do?
- Increases alpha brain waves, associated with a relaxed but focused mental state
- Enhances the production of GABA, dopamine, and serotonin, supporting emotional regulation
- May reduce anxiety, restlessness, and sleep disturbances, especially when taken in the evening
- Often paired with caffeine to promote focus without the jitteriness (some ADHD supplements combine both)
Ways to include L-Theanine:
✅ Drink green tea or decaf green tea (note: has a small amount of caffeine)
✅ Consider timing: morning for focus, evening for calm (pick a decaf version!)
L-Theanine isn’t a cure, but it may provide gentle support for attention and anxiety — particularly for those looking to reduce reliance on stimulants or manage overstimulation naturally.
If you are considering supplementing L-Theanine, always consult a healthcare provider before introducing new supplements, especially for children or when taking medication.
Have you tried green tea for focus or calm? What did you notice?
