Welcome to my A – Z of Nutrition and ADHD series!
Over the course of these posts I’m hoping to raise awareness of the link between nutrition, lifestyle choices and ADHD symptoms.
F is for Fish Oil
Fish oil is high in Omega-3 fatty acids — particularly EPA and DHA — which are essential for brain health. Our brains are nearly 60% fat, and these long-chain fats are critical for supporting mood, memory, focus, and impulse control.
For individuals with ADHD, research suggests that omega-3 supplementation (especially EPA) may improve:
- Attention span
- Hyperactivity
- Emotional regulation
- Sleep quality
- Memory
And for everyone, Fish Oil improves insulin sensitivity, blood sugar balance and hormone balance.
Of course you can get Omega 3 from food sources: oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, herring and trout), walnuts, chia seeds and flaxseeds.
While not a replacement for medication, fish oil can be a valuable complementary support, particularly in children or adults who are mildly affected or cannot tolerate stimulants.
Tips for Using Fish Oil:
✅ Choose a supplement with a higher EPA:DHA ratio (e.g. 2:1)
✅ Aim for 500–1000 mg of EPA per day (under medical guidance)
✅ Look for products tested for purity (free from heavy metals)
✅Always take on a full stomach
✅ If vegetarian or vegan, consider algal oil as a plant-based source
Improvements may take 8–12 weeks to become noticeable, so consistency is key.
Always speak to a healthcare practitioner before starting supplements, especially for children.
Have you tried omega-3 supplements for ADHD? What did you notice?
